Taj Mahal denoting the Crown of the Palace is an Ivory White marble mausoleum (a large burial chamber usually above ground). Mahal is located on the south bank of Yamuna River in the Agra city, Uttar Pradesh, India. Taj Mahal was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan in commemoration of his dearly beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. It is encompassed in 42 acre land. The Taj Mahal was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 for being "the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage". Mahal was described by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore as "the tear-drop on the cheek of time". The construction project employed some 20,000 artisans under the guidance of a board of architects led by the court architect to the emperor, Ustad Ahmad Lahauri.

Taj Mahal will be open from aurora to eventide during normal operating days. Friday will be closed for prayers.

Entry fee for Taj Mahal is Rs.1000 for foreign tourists,  Rs 530  for citizens of SAARC and BIMSTEC countries and  Rs 40  for Indians.
