According to a legend this temple was built by Vontudu and Mittudu, who were robbers turned devotees of Lord Rama, after constructing the temple they are said to have turned themselves into statues, which can be seen at the entrance of the temple and so the name Vontimitta. But some say that since the main idol is carved on a single stone, this temple town is called Vontimitta meaning a single stone. There are two temple tanks known as Rama Theertham and Lakshmana Theertham.

The Sanctum Sanctorum or the Garbhagriha has Lord Rama, Sita and Lakshmana carved out on a single stone.
