How Do Soaping Agents Impact Textile Manufacturing Process

- 16 reads
Soaping agent plays an imperative role in the manufacturing process of dyed or printed textile. So, if you want to learn about soaping agents and want to know how it impacts textile manufacturing process, then this is the post for you.
In this short article, we shall discuss different soaping agents and their role in textile processing.
So, let's dive in…
Before we get into the roles, let's first understand what soaping agents are. Here we go…
Why soaping agents?
Reactive dyes have better property in terms of fastness owing to their covalent bond formation with the cellulosic fibre. They contain chemical groups which react with the hydroxyl group in cellulose under alkaline condition to form covalent bonds. But this alkaline condition also facilitates the bonding of reactive group with the water, resulting in hydrolysis of the dye. Approximately 3/4 th of the dyes get fixed on the fibre while remaining 1/4th gets hydrolyzed. After dyeing, the substrate contains unfixed hydrolyzed dyes and usually some residual active dyes. This hydrolyzed dye adheres onto the substrate and keeps on getting removed during subsequent washing treatments, thus causing poor wash fastness. So besides taking steps to reduce the hydrolysis as much as possible, this hydrolyzed dye must be removed by rinsing and using an appropriate washing-off agent in order to achieve desired fastness properties
What exactly are soaping agents?
Soaping agents, as the name says, are the auxiliary used to Remove excess and unfixed dye present on the fiber surface. It is an important point to obtain a dyed product with excellent fastness by removing hydrolysed dye from the surface of the fabric. Thus, the soaping agents applied in post dying process improve fastness properties. It also prevents re-deposition of dye on the fabric during washing off process of printed fabric and yarn dyed shirtings. Soaping agent accelerates migration of hydrolyzed dye from the textile fiber into the dye bath. It also prevents staining of the ground in case of printed goods.
In the process of making a soaping agent, it contains polymers along with dispersing agents to remove hydrolysed dye from the dyed fabric.
In order to obtain a dyed product that has great fastness, it is essential to remove any extra unfixed dye that is present on the surface of the fibre. Following the process of dying, the textile is rinsed with a lot of water. However, because of the growing awareness of environmental impact issues related to the effluent generation and the stringent rules regarding wastewater treatment, and the need for improved production efficiency, textile manufacturers use less water for rinsing.
As the liquor ratio that is being utilized in the equipment is being reduced, the utilization of an appropriate soaping agent is necessary for the efficient removal of unfixed dyes. Besides removing the unfixed dye, the soaping agent also disperses the dye in the bath and prevents it from re-adhering to the fibre. Both these functions are accomplished by the soaping agent.
During dyeing or printing, depending on the requirement of shade and depth, method of application and machinery used, different kinds of dyes are used and in order to meet the fastness standard, it is essential to select the proper soaping agent to match the dye. This is done in order to achieve the desired coloration.
The five different types of soaping agents that are most frequently utilized in the process of soaping and cleaning the fabrics are as follows:
Sulfonate
Sulphate
Carboxylate
Phosphate
Polyacrylates
How do Soaping Agents Impact Textile Manufacturing Process?
The soaping agents primarily help fabrics maintain color fastness. Rinsing and properly washing with the soaping agents can be used to remove the hydrolyzed dye from the cloth. This is done in order to prevent the fastness qualities of the fabric from being compromised.
To completely clean colored fabric requires going through a few different steps in the procedure. Also, the efficacy of the washing-off process depends on several factors, including the fact that it is a time-consuming process, that it is wholly dependent on the temperature, the kind of soaping agent used and the concentration of the soaping agent.
Hence, it becomes crucial for textile manufacturers to use eco-friendly soaping agents to eliminate their impact on the environment and reduce processing time.
