 Introduction Of Diabetes

Supplements For Diabetes​-Diabetes Mellitus, or simply diabetes, is a metabolic disorder in which the cells of various organs of human body cannot receive energy from the glucose of the digested food. For the cells of human body to receive energy, an intermediary hormone called insulin is necessary which is produced by certain cells called beta-cells existing in a digestive organ called pancreas. Depending on the insulin-production capacity of beta-cells of pancreas and insulin-receptivity of the system, the ailment diabetes is categorized into two main varieties.

Type I Diabetes - is a situation where production of insulin is totally stopped or insulin is generated in insufficient quantities by the damaged beta-cells of pancreas.

Type II Diabetes - is a disorder wherein insulin produced by beta-cells of pancreas is not accepted/recognized by the system considering it unfit for supplying energy to cells of tissues in various organs of the body.

In both the above cases, tissue cells of different organs of the body are energy-starved, in spite of accumulation of unutilized glucose in the blood stream. The health is badly affected in two ways, if diabetes sets in.

  1. The tissue cells become and inefficient in functioning due to lack of supply of oxygen or energy.
  2. There is a piling up of unutilized glucose in the blood, knee-jerking in a host of tormenting complications.

While the Type I diabetes is mostly found in children and adolescents, the Type II diabetes is learnt to occur in middle age or older people. However, both types can be incidental in all age groups.

The general symptoms of diabetes include:

  • Increased thirst or dry mouth
  • Increased hunger
  • Frequent urination
  • Blurred vision, sometimes leading to cataract
  • Unusual weight loss
  • Increased fatigue/tiredness
  • Dry or brittle skin
  • Intolerance to minor dips in temperature of weather
  • Slow healing of wounds/injuries
  • Pricking sensation/Numbness in feet
  • Decrease in immunity power which allows a plethora of new diseases to attack the system
  • Impairing the functioning of kidneys with an impending threat of renal failure
  • Poor efficiency in the functioning of heart, exposing to the possible risk of cardiac failure
  • Frequent bacterial/fungal infections which, if left untreated for a long time, may lead to amputation of affected limbs
  • Nausea/dizziness or vertigo which may lead, in extreme cases, to slipping into irreversible coma and eventual death

Necessary Supplements for Diabetes:

Considering all the above complications, the golden principle is to avoid being the victim of diabetes, unless it is inherited from consanguine members. The main course of mitigating the ill-effects of diabetes is to maintain blood sugar levels in safe limits.

Regular physical exercise, eating healthy food, intake of sugarless low-energy drinks, sufficient sleep are some of the inevitable methods to reduce the bad effects of diabetes. In the cases of more severe afflictions, the daily intake of medicinal tablets/capsules or getting injected with insulinshots in prescribed dosages become a monotonous routine.

Apart from the above, the following food habits would keep you safe from the repercussions of diabetes:

  • Lose weight –  Excess body fat causes cells to become more unresponsive to insulin
  • Eat small quantities of food in frequent intervals – Instead of eating food in large quantities at a time, split the same amount of food in little quantities and eat each instalment at various several intervals
  • Minimize consumption of refined carbohydrates and sugars – Avoid or eat as less as possible the refined carbohydrates and sugars, choosing them with low glycemic index. The better alternative carbohydrates are sweet potatoes, winter squash and beans, to mention a few.
  • Consume least quantities of trans-fats and chemically altered fats – Monosaturated oils such as extra virgin oil and other nut oils should be used in least quantities.
  • Eat liberally non-starchy vegetables – The vegetables like cucumbers, bell peppers, dark leafy greens, brinjal, squash, asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, beans, radish, spinach fit into this category.
  • Be more dynamic physically – Increase your physical activity like aerobic exercises which augment insulin-sensitivity and receptivity of glucose into body cells. Make it a routine affair for a minimum period of thirty minutes.


In addition to the above mentioned selective list of food items, a personalized diet regime is to be adhered to in consultation with an expert dietitian. Since the combination of safe blood sugar levels, sufficient supply of insulin and a healthy conducive diet play together a crucial role, it is important to strike sound balance among all of them.

Researches have shown that several nutrients and supplements are essential to live a safe life in the case of diabetic patients. Magnesium foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids and lower glycemic index-foods dominate the prescribed the regimen.

  • Eat magnesium-rich food every day. Foods like spinach, tofu, almonds, broccoli and lentils, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds come under this category. Magnesium is said to improve the production of insulin.
  • If you are a non-vegetarian, eat fish or molecularly distilled fish-oil supplements.
  • For vegetarians, walnuts or freshly ground flax seeds form an alternative containing omega-3 fatty acids. However, these vegetarian supplements are poorly absorbed by the systems compared to fish-oils.
  • The supplements used by people with diabetes considerably support their efforts of remaining secure.  However, supplements alone do not have curative effects on diabetics. Supplements should not be used to replace the medical treatment which would go against the standard remedial steps. Supplements should be taken in accordance with medical advice given by personal doctor.

Supplements For Diabetes

The list of general supplements is given below :

a) Cinnamon : Cinnamon has been the component of traditional medicine for centuries in China. It is found to reduce blood glucose levels when taken in whole form or extract. Cinnamon continues to be the subject of research study in treating diabetes.

b) Chromium : Chromium is an important element in improving the metabolism of carbohydrates. One should be very careful about the dosage of chromium that enters the body because any disproportionate amount might cause blood sugar go too low or its higher dosages can damage the functioning of kidneys.

c) Vitamin B1: Its other name is Thiamine. Many diabetic patients are tested to be low in thiamine. Deficiency of thiamine not only increases diabetes-related complications but damages blood vessels and heart. Thiamine is water-soluble and cannot get into the cells when necessary. Benfontiamine, a supplemental form of thiamine, has been found to penetrate cell membranes and is lipid-soluble. Though benfontiamine is understood to lessen diabetic ill-effects, it is yet to be fully confirmed.

d) Alpha- Lipoic Acid:  Alpha Lipoic acid (ALA) is a very good anti-oxidant. Certain research reports suggest that ALA can bring down oxidative stress, lessen blood sugar levels and increase insulin-receptivity. It has been noticed in some cases ALA reduced the blood glucose levels to a dangerous extent. Research is still going on about the remedial efficiency of alpha lipoic acid.

e) Bitter Gourd: The use of bitter gourd is recommended as a safe item in the menu of diabetes. But, bitter gourd whether taken as a food item or raw juice, should be used selectively. The intake of uncalculated quantities without following any specific tome schedule can cause heart atrial fibrillation and even coma. People with inefficient liver functioning are advised to exercise caution while considering bitter gourd as remedy for diabetes.

f) Green Tea: Green tea consists of anti-oxidants known as polyphenols, out of which the main anti-oxidant is EGCG (Epigallocatechin Gallate). Research studies have reported that EGCG can be efficient in mitigating the risk of cardio-vascular ailment, improve the regulation of blood glucose levels and increase insulin-acceptability by the system.

g) Reservaratrol: It is a chemical substance found in certain category of grapes and wines. Studies have reported that it could reduce the oxidative stress in animals. But its positive effects in humans are yet to be confirmed.
