What is Arthritis?
Arthritis is also known as joint inflammation. Arthritis is a joint disorder inflicting inflammation at bone joints. It can affect one joint or multiple joints. It can cause pain, swelling and stiffness in and around the joints, occurs in people of all ages including children. But it is found more commonly among adults aged 65 years or older.
Signs and Symptoms of Arthritis:
Symptoms and signs associated with joint pains can include
- Redness at joints
- Swelling at joints
- Tenderness in joints
- Warmth in joints
- Locking of the joints
- Loss of or decrease in range of motion of the joints
Arthritis classified as rheumatic disease can affect various organs of the body that do not directly involve the joints. Thus, symptoms in some patients with rheumatic arthritis can be manifested in the form of
- Gland swelling
- Weight loss
- Feeling unwell
Types Of Arthritis:
More than 100 different types of arthritis are there, but mainly most common types are osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
Osteoarthritis is also called degenerative joint disease or degenerative arthritis. Osteoarthritis occurs when the protective cartilage (a type of firm, thick, slippery tissue that coats the ends of bones where they meet with other bones to form a joint) on the ends of bones wears down over a period of time. Osteoarthritis can affect any joint, but it occurs most often in knees, hips, lower back and neck, small joints of fingers and the bases of the thumb and big toe. Osteoarthritis is the most commonly occurring complaint in people older than 65, although it can occur in people of all ages.
Causes of Osteoarthritis:

- Increasing age
- Previous joint injury
- Overuse of the joints
- Weak thigh muscles
Symptoms Of Osteoarthritis:
Osteoarthritis cannot affect the other organs in the body. It can affect only joints. The usually common symptoms of Osteoarthritis are:
Joint pain, knee pain, hip pain, finger joint pain, ankle pain, foot pain, wrist pain, and shoulder pain, swelling, warmth, and creaking of the affected joints.
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA):
Rheumatoid Arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disorder that can affect joints as well as other areas of the body. RA occurs when immunity system mistakenly attacks body tissues. This creates an inflammation. If inflammation is unchecked, it can damage cartilage. Over time, there is a loss of cartilage and the joint spacing between bones can become smaller.
The result is that joints can become loose, unstable, painful and lose their mobility. Deformity at joints also can occur. Rheumatoid commonly occurs in people aged between 30 to 60 years. Rheumatoid arthritis affects symmetrically that means, if one hand affected, usually the other one is effected, too. Rheumatoid Arthritis affects most commonly joints of the hands, feet, wrists, elbows, knees and ankles. And it also affects any joint in the entire body.
Causes Of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA):
Doctors don't know the exact cause of rheumatoid. But researchers learnt certain things about why and how this happens. Things that may cause RA are so far found to be genes, environment and hormones.
Symptoms Of Rheumatoid Arthritis:
- Stiffness at joints
- Tenderness or weakness
- Fatigue or malaise
- Lumps or redness in Skin
- Dry mouth, flare, physical deformity, or pricking sensation of pins and needles
Best Ways To Prevent And Control The Arthritis:
1. Control Your Weight:
Maintaining a healthy weight helps reduce the risk of osteoarthritis.
2. Quit Smoking:
Smoking causes the Rheumatoid Arthritis; so quitting smoking reduces the risk of RA.
3. Take Healthy Food:
Add fresh fruits to your diet like strawberries, red raspberries, avocado, watermelon, grapes. These fruits contain anti-inflammatory and antioxidant substances and also vitamin C which reduce inflammation and chances of arthritis. And also add vegetables like Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage and Garlic, Sweet Potatoes, Carrots, Red Peppers, Squash, Green Peppers, Onions, Leeks, Shallots and Olives. These are rich in antioxidants and other nutrients that protect against cell damage and reduce inflammation throughout the body including in joints.
4. Eat Fish:
Fishes contain omega-3 fatty acids, healthy polyunsaturated fats. Omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation in the body.

Drinking more water prevents the arthritis because the cartilage in joints is made up mostly of water, which is what makes it such a great cushion for the joints. So, keep your cartilage healthy by drinking six to eight litres of water throughout the day. Water maintains health of kidneys, ulcer control, digestion, functioning of urinary tract.
