Aksharabhyasam in Saraswati Temples:

Aksharabhysam is a traditional religious function in which children make an auspicious beginning of their education. Akshara means “letter or alphabet” in Sanskrit. Abhyasam mean “practice”. The function is performed in different ways in different regions in India. This ceremony would be performed when the child is in his/her 3rd year. This function generally is performed at temples or we can celebrate at home also inviting near and dear ones. The child sits in his father’s or maternal uncle’s lap for Aksharabhyasam. The child holds a plate or slate with rice grains spread on it. The person in whose lap the child sits holds his hand and makes him write the first letters viz., either ‘om’ or ‘om namah sivaya’ in regional language.
