Yttrium Element:
Yttrium is a chemical element and it is a member of group 3 and period 5 in the periodic table. The atomic number of yttrium is 39 and it is indicated by symbol is Y. It is a soft, silver-metallic, lustrous and highly crystalline transition metal in group 3. Yttrium is never found in nature as a free element and it is almost always found in combination with lanthanide elements in rare-earth minerals. 89Y is the only stable isotope.
Uses Of Yttrium Element:
- Yttrium oxide is widely used in making YVO4 europium, and Y2O3 europium phosphors to give the red color in color television tubes.
- Y is also used to produce yttrium-iron-garmets, which are very effective microwave filters.
- The radioactive isotope yttrium-90 is used to treat some cancers, such as liver cancer.
