1. January 2018 Calendar Holidays List:

January is the first month of the present calendar year. It is considered as the ingress or entry of the new year. The month is named after Roman God “Janus”. Initially, the Roman calendar consisted of only ten months, starting from from March, with the total no. of days in the entire year as 304 days. Later about in 713 B.C., the king Numa Pompilius is found to have added two months, January and February. As per the observations of the Nobel Prize winner for literature in 1902, Theodor Mommsen, 1st January became the first day of the calendar year in 600 AUC (153B.C.) of   the Roman Calendar.

2. February 2018 Calendar Holidays List:

February is the second month in the Julian and Gregorian calendar. It based is not only the shortest month, but has the uniqueness of having different number of days, based on the category year. February has generally 28 days every year, except 29 days if the year happens to be a leap year. Leap year occurs once in every four years. To identify a leap year, the common method is to ascertain the complete divisibility of the year by 4. For example, 2016 is totally divisible by 4 without leaving a remainder.  (2016 ÷ 4 = 504). The next leap year, on the same lines, would be 2020.

February was named after the Latin term Februum which means purification, giving due consideration to the purification ritual held on February 15 (full moon) in the old Lunar Roman Calendar.

4. April 2018 Calendar Holidays List:

April is the fourth month in Gregorian calendar and it has a span of 30 days. The month has a vague coincidence with the onset of autumn in certain parts of south hemisphere and spring in some parts of northern hemisphere. The same seasons get interchanged mutually in both the hemispheres in the month of October. Although the root cause of naming the month is obscure, it can be traced to the traditional reference to the season when flower buds and tender shoots of leafy foliage begin to open up in the process of growth because the name April appears to have a dormant association with the verb “aperire” which means to open. In addition, the Roman festival Veneralia is observed on 1st April (the kalends of Aprilis) in honour of Venus Verticordia {Venus, the changer of hearts} and Fortuna Virilis {Manly or Virile Fortune}. This has relevance to the month of April which is believed to be sacred to the Goddess Venus.

5. May 2018 Calendar Holidays List:

The seasons get replaced interchangeably in the month of November in both the hemispheres. The month of May marks the beginning of summer vacation in USA and Canada which ends on Labour Day, the 1st Monday of September. The month May has been named after the Greek Goddess Maia, who was identified with the Roman Goddess of fertility, Bona Dea whose festival was held in May. On the other hand, another version of etymological source was pointed out by the Roman poet Ovid who held that the name May had been derived from the Latin word “maiores” which means elders and the month of May precedes the month of June which has etymological source of the Latin word for young people, denoting the next generation.

The phenomenon of summer solstice (maximum number of daylight hours) and winter solstice (least number of daylight hours) occurs in the month of June. Summer solstice is found in Northern hemisphere and winter solstice is noticed in Southern hemisphere, excluding polar regions of the globe. The first day of June indicates the beginning of  meterological winter in southern hemisphere and June 21st signals the onset of meterological summer in northern hemisphere.
