Xenon Element:

Xenon is an inert gas and its atomic number is 54. It is dense, colourless and odourless. It is present in trace amounts in earth’s atmosphere. All the orbitals of Xenon atom are fully occupied by electrons to the maximum extent and does not have free electrons for formation of bonds with other atoms. In spite of the fact that Xe has been included in the Group 18 of periodic classification of elements due to its least chemical reactivity, the first ever compound by the name Xe  hexaflouroplatinate, Xe[PtF6] by Neil Bartlett has been synthesized in 1962. Since then, many compounds were synthesized from the reactions of Argon, Krypton and Radon. Within a span of nine years from 1962, more than 80 compounds of xenon were prepared.

Nevertheless, xenon is included in the 18th Group of periodic table of chemical elements because of its tightly bound eight electrons in its completely filled outermost shell, unresponsive to normal chemical reactions. There are eight stable isotopes of xenon occurring naturally.

Uses Of Xenon Element:

Xenon is used in light-emitting devices and stroboscopic lamps. It is also used to activate the laser medium enabling them to generate coherent light. Xe has general anesthetic properties. Xe is useful in NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) spectroscopy. It  is also used protein crystallography.


Xenon compounds of oxygen are explosive and exothermic. Xenon gas is kept safely in sealed containers under normal conditions of temperature and pressure. If the gas used as a general anesthesia contains at least 20% of oxygen as a component with the remnant part xenon and sulphur hexafluoride, it can be used as a safe inhalant for patients.
