World Smallest Satellite

World Smallest Satellite - The world’s smallest and lightest 3-D printed satellite was designed by team comprising an 18 year old Rifath Sharook, Vinay Bharadwaj, Tanishq Dwevdi, Gobi Nath, Abdul Kashif and Yagnasai  from various parts of India. Rifath Sharook belongs to Pallapatti town, Tamilnadu. Satellite dubbed as Kalamsat, was named after former President of India and nuclear scientist Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam (APJ KALAM).

What is World Smallest Satellite ?

The weight of Kalamsat is just 64 gram and a cube of 3.8 cm; it is lighter than a smartphone. Kalamsat was made by reinforced carbon fiber polymer. Kalamsat took more than two-years to design the experimental satellite using the 3-D printing technology at a cost of just 1 lakh.

Some parts of the components were made in India indigenously and other parts were supplied from abroad. Sharook project 3-D printed Kalamsat satellite was sponsored by ‘Space Kidz India’ through the contest of cubes in space, which was organized by NASA and I doodle learning Inc, a global education company. The main challenge was to design an experiment to be flown to space that would fit into a four-meter cube weighing 64 gram. NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) selected 3-D printed satellite for launch. The rocket was taking 240 minutes; Kalamsat was operating after 12 minutes the rocket took off. NASA has successfully launched Kalamsat on June 21, Thursday around 3.30pm from Wallops Island, Virginia, United States.

  • Purpose of Kalamsat:

The main role of Kalamsat is how 3-D printed carbon fiber works in a microgravity environment of space. Kalamsat was completely designed from scratch. Kalamsat had a new kind of onboard computer and eight indigenous built-in sensors to measure rotation, radiation level, acceleration and magnetosphere of the earth.

  • 3D Printing:

World Smallest Satellite 3D printing is derived from computer aided design. Once design is completed, design should be translated into Standard Tessellation Language file. The Standard Tessellation Language file then splits into thousands of 2D layers. 3D printer reads the 2D layer as building blocks which it layers on top of the other, thus forming a three dimensional object.

  • Microgravity:

Microgravity means weak gravity. Microgravity sometimes called zero gravity. Heavy objects move easily and astronauts can float in their space craft. In the orbit even if they are of different sizes, gravity pull all objects in the same way. Microgravity affects the body reducing bone strength and increases the risk of formation of kidney stones.
