Thulium Element:

Thulium is a chemical element with atomic number 69 and it is represented by the symbol Tm. It is classified as a lanthanide element by virtue of its properties and is placed in the thirteenth position in the lanthanide series. Generally, it exhibits +3 oxidation state though it is also found to be in +2 oxidation state in certain cases. Like all other lanthanide elements, Tm is a silvery white malleable metal which is so soft that it can be cut with a knife. Thulium gets slowly tarnished on exposure to air, but it burns in air at 150°C to form thulium (III) oxide Tm2O3, also sometimes called thulia. Tm is ferromagnetic below -241.15°C, antiferromagnetic between -241.15°C and -217.15°C. It is paramagnetic above -217.15°C.

There are two allotropes of thulium, α-Tm and β-Tm, out of which the latter is more stable than the former. Tm reacts passively with cold water but quite sooner with hot water to form thulium hydroxide with the release of hydrogen gas. It  reacts with all halogens to form respective thulium trihalides.

The isotopes of thulium have mass numbers varying between from 145 to 179. The isotope with the longest half-life is found to be thulium-169.

Uses Of Thulium Element:

Thulium is used in X-ray scanning. It is also used in high-temperature superconductors. It  is used in yttrium-aluminum garnets used in lasers. Its blue fluorescence helps to distinguish genuine euro banknotes from counterfeit currency notes.
