Sulfur is the non-metallic element belonging to the oxygen family. Its atomic number is 16 and represented by the symbol S. It is a member of group 16 and period 3 in the periodic table. S is the 10th most abundant element in the universe and the fifth most common on Earth. It is a bright yellow element and it was known in ancient times. Except for gold, platinum, iridium, tellurium and the noble gases it reacts with all elements. Sulfur contains 25 known isotopes among which four are stable, 32S, 33S, 34S and 36S.
Uses Of Sulfur Element:
- Sulfur is used in the production of sulfuric acid. Sulfuric acid is used for sulfate and phosphate fertilizers and other chemical processes.
- Sulfur is used in the vulcanisation of black rubber.
- The element sulfur is used in paper, matches, insecticides, and fungicides.
- Natural gas supplies are doped with mercaptans which are a family of organo sulfur compounds to detect gas leakage, by virtue of their distinctive smell.
- Other uses are found in silver polish, in the production of pesticides and herbicides.
