Sodium Element:

Sodium is a metallic element in the first group of periodic table. It has eleven electrons around its nucleus. In its general form, it has eleven protons and eleven neutrons in its nucleus. There are twenty isotopes but only 23Na is the stable isotope among all of them.

The symbol of sodium is Na derived from the Latin word Natrium. Na has one electron in its outermost s-orbital. The atom of Na has a tendency to lose electron in its outermost orbital to gain a noble gas configuration and hence it is said to be electropositive.

Pure sodium is highly reactive when it is exposed to air since it catches fire by reacting with oxygen present in air. Therefore, Na metal is preserved in kerosene for preventing it from catching fire. It is a soft metal and like a piece of rubber, it can be cut with knife. Being highly reactive, Na does not occur in a free state in nature. It is found in combined form of its compounds like rocksalt (NaCl) and in minerals such as feldspar, sodalite etc.It  has low atomic mass but high atomic radius, due to which it is considered as one of the three light elements, the other two elements being Lithium and potassium in the same group I of periodic table. That is why it can float on the surface of water without getting totally immersed.

 Uses Of Sodium Element:

Na is used more in its combined form of its salts and other compounds rather than in its pure form. Metallic Na is mainly used in preparation of sodium borohydride, sodium azide, indigo and triphenylphsophine. One of the most common uses is in preparation of tetraethyl lead (petro-fuel additive). Sodium vapour lamps are used in street lights in cities. Sodium bicarbonate is a culinary additive, commonly known as baking soda. Sodium nitrite, benzoate, monosodium glutamate (MSG) are other food additives.
