Scandium Element in Periodic Table | Atomic Number Atomic Mass

Scandium

Scandium Element:

Scandium is a silvery-white metallic d-block element. Its atomic number is 21 and indicated by the symbol Sc. In the periodic table Sc is a member of 3rd group and 4th period. Sc is not found free in nature but Scandium is usually found in rare minerals from Scandinavia and Madagascar such as thortveitite, euxenite and gadolinite. Commercially, scandium is obtained as a by-product of uranium refining. On Earth Scandium is only the 50th most common element and in the sun it is the 23rd most common element. Sc  contains 1 natural isotope and 13 artificial isotopes. 45Sc is the most stable isotope.

Uses Of Scandium Element:

  • Scandium is mainly used for research purposes. It is used in aluminium- scandium alloys which have been used in Russian MIG fighter planes, high-end bicycle frames and baseball bats.
  • Scandium iodide is used in mercury vapor lamps to produce a highly efficient light source resembling sunlight. These lamps are used to replicate sunlight in studios for the film and television industry to reproduce colour well when filming indoors or at night-time.
  • The radioactive isotope 45Sc is used as a tracing agent in oil refineries. It can also be used in underground pipes to detect leaks.
