Ruthenium Element:
Ruthenium is chemical element classed as a transition metal. It is one of the members in Platinum group metals along with platinum, palladium, rhodium, osmium, iridium. Its atomic number is 44 and indicated by the symbol Ru. In the periodic table it is a d-block metal and it belongs to the 8th group and 5th period. Ruthenium is found very rarely in Earth’s crust in about 100 parts per trillion. It is more commonly found in ores with the other platinum group metals. Small but commercially important quantities are also found in pentlandite and pyroxenite. Seven stable isotopes are present in naturally occurring Ruthenium. Additionally, 34 radioactive isotopes have been discovered.
Uses Of Ruthenium Element:
- Ruthenium is mostly used for chip resistors and electrical contacts.
- For production of chlorine, the anodes of electro chemical cells are coated with ruthenium oxide.
- For the production of ammonia and acetic acid, Ruthenium is used in catalysts.
- In solar cells, Ruthenium compounds can be used, which turn light energy into electrical energy.
- Small amounts of ruthenium are added to platinum and palladium to harden them. These alloys are used to make electrical contacts for severe wear resistance and also used in jewellery.
