Radium is the last element in the second group of periodic table. Its atomic number 88 and it has, like all other alkaline earth metals, two electrons in its outermost s-orbital to be donated to an atom of another element in the formation of chemical bond and a new chemical compound. Due to its presence of two electrons in its peripheral orbital, its combining capacity or valency is two. Rubidium is in its pure form a silvery-white alkaline earth metal and it reacts with nitrogen more readily with nitrogen than oxygen, to form radium nitride Ra3N2.Among all the 33 isotopes of radium known so far, 226Ra is the most stable isotope with half-life of 1600 years. Since it is at the bottom of group II in periodic table, radium is the heaviest alkaline earth metal.
Uses Of Radium Element:
Radium was earlier used in treatment of cancer due to its radioactive properties but its usage has been stopped due to harmful effects on human health and was replaced by less harmful elements as curative substitutes.
It is still used today in locating the defective internal parts of machines, analogous to X-ray scanning.
Health hazards Of Radium Element:
Radium is considered to be the most harmful element due to its high radioactivity.Staying in close proximity to radium for a few hours is sojeopardous that it causes skin ulcers, lesions and either higher intake of miniscule proportions would prove irreversibly carcinogenic. The main peril comes from its radon gas, (rather than the parent radium element itself), which enters human body directly to kill or mutilate healthy cells. Hence, packing the stock of radium is done with ultra- care and people handling the substance are advised to wear thick aprons, gloves and apparels impenetrable to radium element or its daughter-product radon gas.
