Protactinium Element:

Protactinium is the third chemical element in the actinide series of the modern periodic table. It is represented by the symbol Pa and its atomic number is 91. It is preceded by thorium and succeeded by uranium in the series. The most abundant and the longest-lived isotope of protactinium Pa-231 has a half-life of 32760 years and it is a product from radioactive decay of uranium-235. The nuclear isomer Pa-234 is produced in smaller quantities in radioactive chain reaction of decay from uranium-238.

Protactinium is more rigid and dense than thorium but lighter than uranium. It melts at 1568 °C and its melting point is 4027 °C.  Protactinium oxides exhibit three oxidation states +2, +4 and +5. When protactinium hydroxide is ignited in air at a temperature of 500°C, it forms a relatively more stable its pentoxide Pa2O5, which is white in colour. The black protactinium dioxide PaO can be obtained by heating Pa2O5 with hydrogen at a temperature of 1550°C by reduction. However, the pentoxide can be re-obtained by heating PaO at 1100°C in oxygen-rich atmosphere.

Uses Of Protactinium Element:

Protactinium is mainly used for research studies. Since it is toxic due to radioactivity, its biological role is negligible.
