Promethium Element:

Promethium is the fifth chemical element in the lanthanide series of periodic table. Promethium is represented by the symbol Pm and its atomic number is 61.It is preceded by neodymium and succeeded by Samarium in the lanthanide series. It has seven electrons in its external orbitals 4f5 and 6s2. Pm  shows oxidation state of +3 and donates its three electrons, two from its 6s orbital and one from 4f orbital while forming compounds.

The chemical properties of Pm are analogous to its congeners in the lanthanide series. However, the compounds of promethium are highly unstable and hence their properties could not be studied completely. The positive ions Pm+3 present in acidic solutions react with ammonia to form promethium hydroxide Pm (OH)3. Pm chloride PmCl3 is produced when it is dissolved in hydrochloric acid. In the same way, when dissolved in nitric acid, promethium nitrate Pm (NO3)3 is formed. The nitrate salt is soluble in water and when dried, pink coloured crystals are formed, just as in the case of Nd (NO3)3. The isotopes of promethium are unstable.

Uses Of Promethium Element:

The uses of  Pm  are very limited. The radiation given out by promethium is used as aa source of energy. Promethium is also used for measuring thickness of materials. Pm  is used for its special property of emitting luminescence without generation of heat.

Hazards Of Promethium Element:

Since promethium is radioactive, adequate precaution should be exercised to prevent it from entering into human bone tissues, which are vulnerable to carcinogenic radiation.
