Praseodymium Element- Praseodymium is the third chemical element, preceded by lanthanum and cerium in the Lanthanide series of periodic table. It is represented by the symbol Pr and its atomic number is 59. It is a highly reactive element and hence does not occur in free state in nature. Pure praseodymium when exposed to air develops a greenish oxide layer over its surface. Praseodymium is a soft malleable and ductile metal and is in white color in its pure native state.
There are five electrons in its exterior orbitals, two in 6s orbital and three in 4f orbital. Praseodymium generally exhibits +3 oxidation state and donates three electrons while forming compounds. However, extreme conditions are necessary for utilisation of all the five electrons from 4f and 6s orbitals.
The most stable isotope of praseodymium is 141Pr. This is produced in slow and rapid neutron capture in stars. The other isotope 143Pr has a half-life of 13.6 days and most of the remaining isotopes have a half-life of less than a minute. The isotopes of 141Pr and 143Pr occur as products of uranium fission.
Uses Of Praseodymium Element:
Praseodymium is used as an essential component in preparation of misch metal, used in flint substances and tracer bullets. Like other lanthanides, praseodymium is also used in imparting colour to glass, ceramic, enamel and other materials. Pr is used as a component in making didymium glass which is a mixture of other lanthanide elements lanthanum, neodymium, samarium, cerium and gadolinium. Didymium glass is used in preparation in eye-glasses/goggles of welding mechanics as a shield against the blindingly harmful fire-sparks.
