Palladium Element:

The chemical element Palladium is a rare and lustrous silvery-white metal. It is a one of the members in Platinum group metals along with platinum, iridium, rhodium, osmium and ruthenium. Its atomic number is 46 and indicated by the symbol Pd. In the Periodic table it is a d-block metal and it is belongs to the 10th group and 5th period. Pd occurs as a free metal in nature and also alloyed with gold, platinum, and other platinum group metals. 33 known isotopes are present in Palladium. Naturally occurring palladium is a mixture of its seven isotopes, six of which are stable, 102Pd, 104Pd, 105Pd, 106Pd, 108Pd, 110Pd.

Uses Of Palladium Element:

  • Palladium is mostly used in in catalytic converters for automobiles.
  • It is used in some dental fillings and crowns.
  • It is also used in jewellery for example in white gold, an alloy of gold that has been decolourised by the addition of palladium.
  • Palladium is nowadays more and more used in electronics industry in ceramic capacitors, found in laptop computers and mobile phones.
  • Finely divided palladium is a good catalyst and is used for hydrogenation/ dehydrogenation reactions and for petroleum cracking.
  • Hydrogen easily diffuses through heated palladium so it is also used to purify hydrogen.
