The chemical element oxygen is a highly reactive non-metal. Its atomic number is 8 and indicated by the symbol O. In the periodic table of elements, oxygen is a p-block element and it belongs to group 16 and period 2. After hydrogen and helium it is the third most abundant element in the universe. It is also most abundant element in the Earth’s crust. More than half of all the atoms in the Earth’s crust are oxygen atoms. It is capable of combing with all elements except inert gases. Naturally occurring O contains 3 stable isotopes, 16O, 17O and 18O. 14 radioisotopes have been characterized. Around 2 billion years ago, oxygen first appeared in the Earth’s atmosphere, accumulating from the photosynthesis of Cyanobacteria.
Uses Of Oxygen Element:
- The greatest commercial use of O is in steel production.
- O is also used in oxyacetylene welding and cutting of metal.
- It is also used in the production of ethylene oxide, which is used as antifreeze and to make polyester, and chloroethene, the precursor to PVC.
- Living things depend on oxygen for respiration.
- Patients who have respiratory ailments are given extra doses of oxygen.
