Osmium Element in Periodic Table | Atomic Number Atomic Mass

Osmium

Osmium Element:

The chemical element Osmium is classed as hard, brittle, bluish-white transition metal. It is one of the members in Platinum group metals along with platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium. Its atomic number is 76 and represented by the symbol Os. In the periodic table it is a d-block metal and it is belongs to the 8th group and 6th period. The element occurs combined in nature and also in the mineral osmiridium and iridosmium. Osmium contains seven naturally occurring isotopes, among six are stable, 184Os, 187Os, 188Os, 189Os, 190Os and 192Os.

Uses Of Osmium Element:

  • Because of its density, osmium is often used alloyed with other metals in the platinum group to produce very hard alloys for fountain pen tips, instrument pivots, needles and electrical contacts.
  • It is also used as catalyst in the chemical industry.
