Molybdenum Element- The chemical element Molybdenum is a silvery white and very hard transition metal. It is represented by the symbol Mo and its atomic number is 42. In the periodic table, it is a member of d-block, 6th group and 5th period. Molybdenum does not occur naturally as a free metal on earth. Mo is most often found in minerals from molybdenite, wulfenite and powellite. Some molybdenum is obtained as a bye-product of tungsten and copper production. Molybdenum has 35 known isotopes and four metastable nuclear isomers. Among 92Mo, 94Mo, 95Mo, 96Mo, 97Mo, 98Mo, and 100Mo are seven naturally occurring isotopes. Of these naturally occurring isotopes, except 100Mo, remaining all are stable isotopes.

Uses Of Molybednum Element:

  • Most of the production of the molybdenum is used in steel alloys to increase strength, hardness, electrical conductivity and resistance to corrosion and wear. These ‘moly steel’ alloys are used in parts of engines.
  • It is also used in petroleum industries as a catalyst in the refining of petroleum.
  • Molybdenum has been used as electrodes for electrically heated glass furnaces and forehearths.
  • Molybdenum is an essential element for animals and plants. Animals and plants use about 50 different enzymes, which contain molybdenum. One of these is nitrogenase, found in nitrogen-fixing bacteria that make nitrogen from the air available to plants. Leguminous plants have root nodules that contain nitrogen-fixing bacteria.
