Lawrencium Element:

Lawrencium is the last chemical element in the actinide series of periodic table. It is denoted by the symbol Lr (previously Lw) and its atomic number is 103. The element has been named after the Nobel Prize winner and American nuclear physicist Ernest Lawrence who invented “first particle accelerator” called cyclotron which facilitated hastening up speed of nuclear particles at high velocities without use of high voltages. As in the case of all elements with atomic number 100 and above, the element lawrencium can be produced only by bombardment of lighter elements with charged particles.

Out of the twelve known isotopes, lawrencium-266 is found to be more stable with a half-life period of eleven hours although the isotope Lr-260 with lesser half-life of 2.7 minutes is conveniently produced in bigger quantities. Lawrencium is observed to manifest similar chemical properties as that of its lighter counterpart Lutetium in the lanthanide series. Nevertheless, lawrencium displays distinct electronic configuration from lutetium in its external electron orbitals such that s2p configuration is noticed unlike s2d configuration in lutetium. Hence, s2p configuration explains about its higher volatility more precisely.

Uses Of Lawrencium Element:

  • Lawrencium is not of much commercial use. Since its study is still in rudimentary stages, the element is at present exclusively used for research purposes.
