Krypton Element:

Krypton is an inert gas represented by the symbol Kr. Its atomic number is 36 and has a stable electronic configuration. Due to its completely filled electronic subshells, it is chemically least reactive and its valency is zero. Kr is included in the 18th Group of periodic table and due to its chemical non-reactivity with rare exceptions, it is called an inert gas/noble gas. It is a colourless, tasteless and odourless gas.

Krypton is formed during uranium fission, among other products. Kr occurs in trace amounts in atmosphere. The presence of Kr is exhibited by many spectral lines and the plasma version of kr is useful in bright and high-powered gas lasers ( krypton ion and excimer lasers). Krypton is identified by sharp spectral lines among which the strongest of them are in green and yellow colour. In the earth’s atmosphere, kr is known to exist as five stable isotopes and another radioactive isotope 78Kr with the second longest half-life in the universe (9.2 x 1021 years).

Uses Of Krypton Element:

Krypton is used in certain photographic flash lights in high speed photography. Kr is mixed with other gases in production of bright greenish-yellow lights in making luminous sign-boards. Another use of Krypton is, it is mixed with Argon for making in the energy-efficient fluorescent lamps. Krypton fluoride laser is used in nuclear fusion energy experiments in confinement experiments. Liquid Krypton is used in constructing quasi-homogeneous electromagnetic calorimetres.
