Iodine Element:

Iodine is the chemical element and it is represented by the symbol I and its atomic number is 53. In the periodic table it is a p-block element and it is a member of the 17th period and is placed in group 5. It exists as a lustrous purple-black non-metal that is solid under standard conditions of temperature and pressure. It is mostly found in seawater, as iodide. Iodine has 37 known isotopes of iodine, only one occurs in nature, 127iodine. The others are radioactive with half-lives too short to be primordial.

Uses Of Iodine Element:

  • Today, iodine has many commercial uses. Iodide salts are used in many pharmaceuticals. Iodised edible salt is an essential additive in culinary preparations.
  • Iodine is used in manufacture of disinfectants.
  • It  is necessary in making certain printing-inks and dyes.
  • Iodine compounds are useful as catalysts in certain chemical reactions.
  • It is used in production of animal feed supplements.
  • Iodine is an important ingredient in photographic chemicals. Iodine is also used to make polarising filters for LCD displays.
  • It is essential in the synthesis of thyroid hormones. Deficiency of iodine can lead to serious health problems including the swell-up of thyroid gland resulting in goitre. Adequacy of iodine in human body is invariably emphasised by medical doctors as well as dietitians.
