Fermium Element:

The synthetic chemical element fermium is classed as an actinide metal. It was actually the eighth transuranium element (the chemical elements with atomic numbers greater than 92) to be discovered.  It is named after the one of the pioneers of nuclear physics, Enrico Fermi. Its atomic number is 100 and indicated by the symbol Fm. Fermium does not occur in nature and it can be prepared in microgram quantities by the neutron bombardment of plutonium in a nuclear reactor, although pure fermium metal has not yet been prepared. It has 20 known isotopes with atomic masses ranging from 241 to 260 and it has no stable isotopes. 257Fm is the longest lived isotope and has half-life of 100.5 days.

  • Fermium is used scientific research purpose only. Since it is toxic due to radioactivity, its biological role is negligible.
