Ethiopian Birr

Ethiopian birr currency:

The birr is the official currency in Ethiopia. The official code of currency is ETB.  It is subdivided into 100 santim. The central Bank of Ethiopia is the National Bank of Ethiopia. The Bank of Abyssinia was established by Emperor Menelik in 1905. Emperor Haile Selassie purchased the Bank of Abyssinia was purchased in 1931 by the Emperor Haile Selassie for £235,000 for the purpose of having total indigenous autonomous monetary control on it.  It was later reorganized as Bank of Ethiopia. The first birr was introduced in 1855 and second birr was reintroduced in 1945.

First Birr:

Copper coins were introduced between 1894 and 1897 in denominations of 1/100 and 1/32, 1/8, ¼, ½ and 1 birr and gold ¼, ½ and 1 werk.  A new series of coins was introduced in 1931 consisting of copper 1 and 5 metonnyas and nickel 10, 20 and 50 metonnyas.

Second Birr:

Coins were reintroduced in 1944, with copper 1, 5, 10 and 25 santim and silver 50 santim. In 1977, a second series was issued in denominations of aluminum 1 santim, brass 5 and 10 santim and cupro-nickel 25 and 50 santim.  The current circulating coins are 1, 5, 10, 25 50 santim and 1 birr.

Banknotes:

First Birr:

5, 10, 100 and 500 talari banknotes introduced by Bank of Abyssinia in 1915. In 1929, a 50-talari note was added. In 1932, the Bank of Ethiopia issued in denominations of 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 talari.

Second Birr:

The State Bank of Ethiopia introduced banknotes on 23 July 1945 in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 birr.  At present, the banknotes in circulation are of the denominations 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 birr.
