Dysprosium Element:

Dysprosium is a chemical element belonging to the lanthanide series of elements in the periodic table. It is represented by the symbol Dy and its atomic number is 66. It is mostly found in minerals such as xenotime. It is preceded by Terbium and succeeded by holmium in the lanthanide series. Dysprosium shines with bright silver luster and it is  soft enough to be cut with a knife. It gets slowly tarnished when exposed to air but reacts readily at higher temperatures with oxygen to form its oxide, called dysprosia, which is more magnetic than iron oxide. Dysprosium reacts slowly with cold water and vigorously with hot water to form dysprosium hydroxide, releasing hydrogen gas. At temperatures more than 200 °C, it reacts with halogens to form respective halides. While reacting with non-metals like Nitrogen, Phosphorous, Sulphur, Hydrogen, Boron and Carbon, dysprosium forms respective binary compounds exhibiting both +3 and +2 oxidation state.

The naturally occurring dysprosium is a mixture of seven isotopes with varying mass numbers 156, 158, 160, 161, 162, 163 and 164. Out of them, 156Dy is found to be most stable. Apart from these, as many as twenty nine isotopes have been synthesized with atomic masses ranging from 138 to 173, of which 154Dy was observed to be relatively stable with a half-life of more than 3 x 106 years.

Uses Of Dysprosium Element:

Dysprosium is used in permanent magnet industry because its oxide is more magnetic than iron oxide. It is also used in cermet alloy Terfenol-D ( the letter D denoting dysprosium ) containing iron and terbium utilized as transducers, mechanical resonators and precision liquid-fuel injectors. Dysprosium oxide is also used as a dopant in specialized capacitors for electronics industry. Nanofibres containing certain dysprosium compounds possess large surface area and are extremely strong.
