Curium Element in Periodic Table | Atomic Number Atomic Mass

Curium

Curium Element:

Curium is a radioactive chemical element of the actinoid series of the periodic table. It was actually the third transuranium element (the chemical elements with atomic numbers greater than 92) to be discovered. The element was named after Marie and Pierre Curie. Its atomic number is 96 and represented by the symbol Cm. Curium is a hard, lustrous, silvery metal. Curium does not occur in nature and it is produced by the neutron bombardment of plutonium in a nuclear reactor. Curium has 21 known isotopes with atomic masses ranging from 232 to 252 and it has no stable isotopes. 247Cm is the longest lived isotope, has half-life 15.6 million years.

Uses Of Curium Element:

  • Curium is mainly used for scientific research purposes and it has been used to provide power to electrical equipment used on space missions. Since it is toxic due to radioactivity, its biological role is negligible.
