Cobalt Element:

Cobalt is a chemical element and it is a member of group 9 and period 4 in the periodic table. The atomic number of cobalt is 27 and it is indicated by symbol is Co. Cobalt is a ferromagnetic. It is a bluish-white, hard, lustrous and brittle metal. It is found in the Earth’s crust only in chemically combined form. The stable isotope of cobalt is 59Co; it is the only isotope that exists naturally on  earth.

Uses of Cobalt Element:

  • Co is used to make magnets. Co is alloyed with aluminium and nickel to make powerful magnets.
  • Other alloys of cobalt are used in jet turbines and gas turbine generators.
  • Radioactive cobalt-60 is used to treat cancer
  • Co salts are used to produce blue colours in paint, glass, porcelain, pottery and enamels.
