Boron Element:

Boron is the first and lightest element of group 13 in the periodic table. Boron is represented by the symbol B and atomic number is 5. B  is quite different from other members of the group. One difference is that boron is not a metal and it is a metalloid and remaining all other elements of the group (aluminum, gallium, indium, and thallium) are metals. Boron has 8B, 10B, 11B, 12B, 13B isotopes but stable and naturally occurring isotopes are 10B, 11B.  B is a low-abundance element in the Solar system and in the Earth's crust. It is not present in nature in elemental form. It is found combined in borax, boric acid, kernite, ulexite, colemanite and borates.

Boron Element Uses:

  • Amorphous boron is used as a rocket fuel igniter and in pyrotechnic flares.
  • Most important compounds of boron such as borax, boric acid and boric oxide can be used in in eye drops, mild antiseptics, washing powders and tile glazes.
  • Borax is used to make bleach and as a food preservative.
  • Boric oxide is most commonly used in the manufacture of a particular type of glasses.
  • Boric acid is used in liquid  fertilizers in agriculture
  • Boron compounds play a vital role for the cell walls of plants, making boron a necessary plant nutrient.
