Beryllium Element:
Beryllium is an element in the second group and second period of periodic table. It is an alkaline - earth metal.Beryllium is white gray in color and it is relatively soft and also one of the lightest of all metals in the second group. Beryllium atomic number is 4 and the symbol is Be. Be has 12 known isotopes, but only one of these isotopes (9Be) is stable and a primordial nuclide. Be has two electrons in its outermost orbital and its combining capacity or valency is two. Be is a divalent element which occurs naturally only in combination with other elements in minerals.
Beryllium Element Uses:
- To make gyroscopes, springs, electrical contacts, spot-welding electrodes and non-sparking tools, beryllium is used in alloys with copper or nickel. To increase the electrical and thermal conductivity of copper and nickel Beryllium should be mixed with them, while preparing alloys.
- It is used in preparation of aircraft components, missiles, spacecraft and satellites because of its high flexural rigidity, thermal stability, thermal conductivity and low specific gravity of 1.85 times that of water.
- Beryllium is relatively transparent to X-rays and other forms of ionizing radiation because of its low density and atomic mass and it is widely used for X-ray equipment and components of particle detectors.
Caution:
Beryllium is a very toxic metal. It is especially dangerous in powder form. If beryllium dust or fumes are inhaled, it can lead to chronic effects including diseases of the respiratory system, such as bronchitis and lung cancer.
