Belize dollar is the official currency of Belize.The symbol used for the Belize Dollar is the same as the US Dollar ($). The country also uses BZ$ to distinguish the Belize Dollar from the USD.It is subdivided into 100 cents. On January 1, 1974, The Belize dollar was officially recognized as the currency for Belize when it replaced the British Honduras dollar.

Bank notes were introduced in 1894 in the denominations of 100, 50, 10, 5, 2 and 1 Dollar. British Honduras was officially renamed Belize in 1973 and the following year new family of notes was introduced with the new country name. The Monetary Authority of Belize was established on November 1, 1976 and it took over paper money production. On January 1, 1982, the Central Bank of Belize was established. It produced banknotes in 1983. Currently circulating banknotes are of the denominations $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, $100 and coins are 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 cents, $1.
