Americium

Americium Element:

Americium is a chemical element in the actinide series of periodic table. Its symbol is Am and its atomic number is 95. It is preceded by Plutonium and succeeded by curium in the actinide series. It lies below the europium of lanthanide series and hence has been given the name Americium by analogy. Americium usually exhibits +3 oxidation state in solutions but its oxidation states from +2 to +7 are also observed by their characteristic absorption spectra.

The key isotopes of americium are with mass numbers 241 and 243. It melts at 1176°C and its boiling point is 2011°C. It is silvery in appearance and it is a shiny and radioactive metal.

Uses Of Americium Element:

Americium is used in domestic smoke alarms. Its use in space craft batteries is under study. It is the subject of scientific research in nuclear chain reactions.

Precautions:

Careful handling of americium like wearing sufficiently thick apron/garments is essential since the element has penetrative property into human body one account of its radioactive nature.
