Albanian Lek Currency | Albania Lek Notes Coins
Albanian Lek Currency:
The Lek is the official legal tender of Albania, a country in Southeastern Europe. It is a decimalized currency and hence it is further subdivided into one hundred equal parts called qindarka. However, the official currency of Albania is theoretically divisible into a hundred qindarka but the use of qindarka has become practically obsolete. The symbol and code of the Albanian lek is ALL and it is denoted with the letter L.
The issuance, regulation and withdrawal of the currency are monitored by the central bank of the country called Bank of Albania. The name Lek was adopted in honor of the warrior Alexander, the Great who had been referred to by a smaller title Leka in Albanian language. His bust-size profile was etched on the obverse and his image of riding on the horse was engraved on the reverse of the coin with denomination of 1 Lek. However, the coin of 1 Lek is currently of rare usage.
The banknotes that are in active circulation are of the denominations 200L, 500L, 1000L, 2000L and 5000L. The coins in frequent usage are 5L, 10L, 20L, 50L and 100L. Apart from the above, commemorative coins were issued in 2001 in the denominations of 100 and 200 L in the wake of Albania’s inclusion into European Union and the coins of 50, 100 and 200 L were minted in the context of 500th anniversary of the Statue of David. Again in the year 2002, as a part of celebration of 50th anniversary of independence of Albania, the coins of 50L and 100Land also the coins of 20 Leke under the Albanian Antiquity theme were released. The coin of 50 L was issued as a mark of paying homage to the much revered distinguished writer and nationalist Jeronim De Rada, on his 100th death anniversary. Another set of coins of 50 L was issued in 2004 which carried the traditional costumes of Albania and the ancient Dea. The coins of the same denomination 50 L were minted while celebrating the 85th anniversary of proclamation of Tirana as the national capital under the theme of traditional attires of Albania.
