Dudhsagar Waterfalls is one of the tallest waterfalls in India. This place is majestic, gigantic, lovely and buzzes with water streams falling headlong on Mandovi River.The waterfalls are located on the border between Karnataka and Goa states of India.

River Mandovi which is the main river in Goa begins through the state of Karnataka winding its way through the Western Ghats. This river gracefully plummets over the tall mountains on the border of Goa and Karnataka, thus forming the enchanting Dudhsagar waterfalls which forms a beautiful deep green pool at the base of the fall before it continues west and joins the Arabian sea. It is 310m (1017ft) in height and 100ft in width. The waterfalls splits into three streams as it collides over the mountains thus forming a lovely, white majestic sight.
One legend says that there was a beautiful young princess, who as usual after bathing in the lake was drinking milk and was suddenly confronted by a handsome prince. The maids of the princess poured the milk in a cascade in front of her thus creating a curtain behind which she could don her attire and thus the falls was named as dudh sagar which means the sea of milk. The waterfall is at its peak during the monsoon months from June to September and wanes out towards the summer from March to June. The Railway Bridge built atop the falls adds an extra feature to the marvellous scenic beauty of the falls.

Best Time To Visit Dudhsagar:
The best time to visit Dudhsagar Waterfalls is any time from October to April when the weather is quite pleasant, and the day time temperature stays below the 32 degrees C mark. Trekking or Jeep Ride to Dudhsagar falls is possible only after monsoon. However during monsoon, the only way to visit Dudhsagar is by taking a train.
How To Reach Dudhsagar Waterfalls?
By road one can reach by taxi to Bhagwan Mahavir Wild Sanctuary. There are jeeps available for hire and can carry six people; the driver leaves you at the drop point and waits for one and half hour for bringing you back. One of the preferred tourist treks is the one that begins at the Castle Rock station. This trek covers about 14 Kms of rough terrain.
The nearest Railway Station accessible by road from the falls is The Castle Rock Station in Karnataka. Rani Chennamma Express from Bangalore to Londa junction, or direct train to Castle Rock Station are the main conveyances. The train route from Londa to Goa via Dudhsagar is one to remember for its picturesque scenic beauty.

Tips On Visiting Dudhsagar:
A passenger train leaves every morning from Madgaon, Goa for Kulem. From Kulem, get on a goods train (request the motorman) and jump off the train at Dudhsagar. It is not an official stop. Regular trains do not halt at Dudhsagar. Alternately get there from Castle Rock, again by a goods train. Chances of this train halting at Dudhsagar are higher than from Madgaon. Or take an Indian Railway train like Amravati Express and get off at Sonalium. A couple of kilometers’ walk from Sonalium will get you to the Dudhsagar waterfalls. Get a map of Madgaon. Names of some train stations are similar (Kulem and Kalem) and can be misleading. Have a map to avoid any confusion. No food is available at Dudhsagar waterfalls. You must carry their own supplies, preferably from Madgaon.
